How chance started

The answer is, from scratch, 10 years ago, with no:

Either pretty crazy or with at least a bit of vision!
The objective was not to create just another insurance brokerage, but a specialized professional intermediary of innovative insurance solutions.

History of Chance

"IN THE BEGINNING.."

…we thought “we would be just an insurance broker”. But we quickly discovered that the needs of the market were more segmented and not being addressed by the current players.

So, we kept “Intermediation” at the front and added a specific “placement with risk takers” function, which allowed us to work for other brokers as well and accomplished as an independent underwriting agency (working for the broker, not the risk taker like regular “MGAs”).

Later a risk taker asked if we could perform highly-specialized “Underwriting” for them.

Then we realized that in order to meet client needs in terms of flexibility and rapidity, but also help clients drive their businesses based on the power of information, we had to be in charge of both actual program management (data), so we set up “Administration”.

Our original brands/divisions were brought together under a single, unified brand in 2021.

But neither our philosophy nor our focus has changed since the start.

What’s in a name

Name – chance is the fundamental element of our main business: insurance. We chose “Financial” to be part of the domain name/URL, because we are trusted like a financial institution, managing programs beyond their insurance aspect and also developing non-insurance programs chance is also the name of a specialized statistics magazine that gives us entrepreneurial inspiration

At the heart of our identity, the diamond embodies the unique role of chance.

More than just a graphic symbol, it represents the point of connection between the various stakeholders of the ecosystem: companies, insurers, technologies, and users.

The shifting gradients within the shape evoke movement, circulation, and flow. They symbolize how chance bridges systems, facilitates the exchange of value, and transforms complex environments into fluid solutions.

This simple, balanced form serves as a point of convergence—a place where opportunities meet and align.

Minimalist and open, the mark asserts a contemporary vision of insurance: no longer an isolated product, but an integrated, connected service that creates value.

Its color gradients evoke the flows and interactions moving between these players.

Colors – They represent one of the original divisions that were unified in 2021.

Anthony Fienberg

- Founder & CEO

After an internship in the reinsurance department of AGF (since rolled-up into Partner Re), Anthony Fienberg started his career as an underwriter in the international department of Prudential Re (now Everest Re), serving both Middle East & African clients, as well as US brokers for Europe and Asia-Pacific. Then he switched tracks to start a Directors & Officers Liability portfolio as an underwriter at CIGNA (then Ace after it was purchased, now part of Chubb), first in London and afterwards in Paris, later being promoted to underwriting manager for Western Europe. Next, Chubb (read: the company later purchased by Ace, who took over the name) recruited him to run the fast-growing middle market segment for its Executive Protection department and during his tenure he did a stint as a business consultant for deploying a new pan-European system for its entire Chubb Specialty Insurance division.

Already enjoying entrepreneurial challenges, he started the French branch of the Dutch insurer Nassau (now HDI), writing Directors & Officers, Contaminated Product, Kidnap & Ransom and Professional Indemnity/Errors & Omissions. After a brief stint at starting an underwriting agency, he later joined The Warranty Group (now Assurant) as Managing Director for France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Since he founded it in 2016, he has been CEO of chance.
